We thought we would share with you what a typical Jazz class is like at Eliza-Jane’s School Of Dance. This is our most popular style of dance and the students have an absolute ball every week. It’s fast, upbeat and exciting and there’s always so much to learn.
We start each lesson off with a warm up through playing a game or just working on cardio. We then work on strength with a focus always on abs. Then we move onto our stretches and work on each muscle from head to toe. The students love focusing on the splits and trying to get better at this each week.
After stretches, we do our centre and corner work. This includes: kicks, leaps, jumps and pirouettes. A prop that was use in a few classes is the ‘turning board’, a small device that the dancer stands on to help them turn. This was a favourite part of class as it was always exciting to see who could do the most turns.
The final part of the class is the dance routine. Every term the students learn a new routine and in term 3 and 4, they learn a routine for the concert. The students love singing at the top of their lungs each week to their favourite songs. This year we aren’t doing a concert, but instead, we are having a parent’s week. The teachers have been working hard on a mini show with a theme for each of their classes. Each student will get a little solo as well. It’s going to be an exciting term 4!
